Introduction

The F-100D has four Pontiac M-39 20 mm revolving cannons mounted on the underside of the aircraft's nose. Each cannon fires at 1500 rounds per minute, for a total combined fire-rate of 6000 rounds per minute. Each cannon has 200 rounds, for a total of 800 rounds.

Gun Missile Switch

The gun missile switch controls electrical power for the upper and lower guns, and missiles.

Position Description
MISSILES The missile selection provides power to the Missile Control Panel and through any AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles.
SAFE Removes power from the weapons system, rendering it SAFE.
UPPER Energizes the second trigger detent and ARMS upper guns.
ALL Energizes the second trigger detent and ARMS upper and lower guns.
LOWER Energizes the second trigger detent and ARMS lower guns.
POD Unused on the F-100D

With the gun missile switch in any position, the Gun Camera is actuated by pressing the first trigger detent.

Caution

Gun missile firing circuits are inhibited when weight is on the wheels.

Firing the Guns

Once the gun missile switch is positioned in UPPER, LOWER or ALL position, weight is off wheels, and the aircraft has electrical power, pressing the trigger second stage detent fires the armed guns.
